Amid green mountains, shrouded in a misty dawn
where Senghenydd village lay
the valley of the tears was born
On that cold October day.
There, broken hearted women
in woven shawls of grey
prayed desperately for their stricken men
On that cold October day.
The mountains echoed with a muted sound
as thousands knelt to pray
for those miners trapped beneath the ground
On that cold October day.
Four hundred men and more, died there in the dark
A fearful price to pay
The Aber valley broke its heart
On that cold October day.
Now those miners walk in history
and in fabled legend too, some say
Their death, a silent mystery
On that cold October day.
Often now a distant memory warms my heart
To echo in the corridors of my mind, and far away
I hear those miners singing, softly in the dark
On that cold October day.
