The decades all have passed me by
and I wonder where they went.
A tower block, now stark against the sky
replaced the folk, who were heaven sent
who had lived in Clapham streets.
Did those streets weep tears of sadness
when their folk were forced to leave.
Whilst bulldozers created madness
and left all those to grieve,
who had lived in Clapham streets.
I hear the ghostly voices, whispering to me
reminding me of days long gone,
of friends who said “hello” and how things used to be
and those people who were good and strong
who had lived in Clapham streets.
Half a century gone and nothing is the same
except our memories of early Clapham days
and if sometimes should we forget a face or name
but remember still, those folk with praise
who had lived in Clapham streets.
Their homes are lost, now concrete fills the ground
and all the kids have long since gone.
With forlorn hope, the ‘Rec’ still waits, to hear the sound
of children and all their families strong
who had lived in Clapham streets.
